What Is a Good Typing Speed for Data Entry?

"What's a good typing speed?" is one of the most common questions people ask before applying for data entry work. The honest answer depends on what kind of typing you mean: alphabetic typing measured in words per minute, or numeric-heavy keying measured in keystrokes per hour. Employers rarely expect elite speed. They expect a consistent, accurate pace that holds up over a full shift.

Gross WPM vs. net WPM

Gross words per minute (WPM) counts every word typed in a minute, regardless of mistakes. Net WPM subtracts a penalty for errors, usually calculated as gross WPM minus the number of uncorrected errors divided by the time in minutes. Net WPM is the number that actually matters for data entry, because it reflects output you can trust rather than raw finger speed.

A typing test that reports only gross WPM can be misleading. Someone who types 70 gross WPM but makes 10 errors in a one-minute test may have a net speed closer to 60 WPM — and in a job where every error has to be found and fixed later, that gap costs real time.

Words per minute vs. keystrokes per hour

General data entry — filling in forms, updating customer records, transcribing text — is usually measured in WPM. Numeric-heavy work, such as invoice processing, inventory codes, or financial keying, is more often measured in keystrokes per hour (KPH), because numbers don't map cleanly onto "words." A single 10-digit account number is one "word" by character count but ten keystrokes.

Job postings vary widely. Some ask for 40 WPM, others 60+. Treat any number in a job listing as that employer's requirement, not a universal standard.

Why accuracy outweighs speed

A fast typist who introduces errors creates rework: someone has to catch the mistake, trace it back to the source, and correct it — often taking longer than if the record had been typed slowly and correctly the first time. Most employers would rather have a 45 WPM typist at 99% accuracy than a 70 WPM typist at 92% accuracy.

This is also why many typing tests and job assessments report both numbers side by side. Speed without an accuracy figure attached tells an employer very little about how useful that speed actually is.

What to put on a resume or application

If a job posting asks for a typing speed, list your net WPM from a recent timed test, not an estimate. "55 WPM, 98% accuracy (tested [date])" is far more credible than a bare number with no context, and it signals that you understand the difference employers actually care about.

  • Test again if it's been more than a few months — speed and accuracy both drift with practice or lack of it
  • Note the test length (1, 3, or 5 minutes) if asked, since longer tests are considered more reliable
  • If applying for numeric-heavy roles, test and report KPH rather than WPM
